From History of Podcasting

Welcome to the start of a Wiki specifically for the History of Podcasting. To learn more about the genesis of this project, Dan Klass wrote an article you need to read: Wikipedia Doesn't Want You.

This site is to honor all of the hard work of every podcaster that made podcasting what it is. The effort continues. Lets make sure all of the hard work isn't forgotten.

We are looking at adding information, for the moment, from 2000 - 2006 in the categories of People, Podcast, Items (books, mics, recording devices, mixers), and Events. I'll be getting information from wikipedia but there is a lot of missing information out there that should be captured and archived.

Please note the active objectives of the site are to capture points in time regarding the History of Podcasting. Our focus is currently on the very beginning, but that doesn't mean that podcasts outside of this time frame cannot be added, but the focus should be on our active goals.

For now - not many guidelines - try to loosely keep to wikipedia citation standards (throw in a citation or two), but it is not necessary. Original research is ok! Feel free to get as technical as you want. Some guidelines have been developed and you can view them on our about page.

I will try to pull a few articles a day from Wikipedia and start making templates for those that are not on Wiki. Most of my attention will be focused on the podcasters that I listened to primarily in 2005-2007 (Verge of the Fringe, The Hollywood Podcast, The Bitterest Pill, Tres Jefes - mostly LA Based). This is where I will need your help to start capturing all the others that inspired and set the groundwork for Podcasters today.

Email Webmaster if you have any specific questions or concerns. I will be able to respond within two business days.

P.S. I would like this to be as inclusive as possible - I know we are limited in that this is an english written site - but I encourage all podcasters regardless of location to contribute or suggest additions.

How To

If you would like to contribute to this project, please create an account. This project is currently only being administered by a skeleton crew, and we'd like to focus on getting as much content on the site without having to police the site. This project really is a labor of love - you can learn more about this project at About Page.

I'd like to have at least 50 contributors by the end of this year in order to consider continuing this project.

Once you create an account, do a search to see if your project has already been added - if not then, please create a page. There isn't a set template, but here are some tips.

  1. Check out our getting started page.
  2. Check out our Tips page
  3. Use the Podcast Infobox to help standardize the info box for each podcast page.
  4. Provide a description of the podcast, memorable historical moments, guest appearances, memorabilia, if you received any media attention create a list - list your episodes.
  5. If wiki markup just isn't your thing then please consider doing a writeup in word and email the Webmaster the document, any photos and the original url and we'll make sure to get your listing added

This is going to be a large project that may take a few years to complete. To assist with this I have created a Request page where we can start to organize the pages that need to be created. Please try to keep the requests for podcasts and producers active pre 2007. I'll be working on creating templates and items to help categorize each entry - but it will take time as this project is in its infancy.

If you need a template or functionality from Wikipedia - let me know and I'll bring it over if it is within the capability of my hosting plan (i.e. there is a cool wysiwyg for editing; however, I cannot run node.js on my plan).

I created a few pages back in 2006 for the podcasts that I listened to. Unfortunately, most were deleted because they did not meet Wiki's notability standards. Fast-forward to October 13, 2015 one of my few remaining pages (LA Podcasters) was listed for deletion. Apparently Dan Klass had created a page for Lance Anderson which caught the attention of a few narrow-minded and short-sided editors. These did not survive the chopping block whereas I know many other podcasts and podcasters will remain. I created this place so that a history of podcasting can be documented by those that actually experienced it.
